I hear you. When I was working at local stations, we always worked deals with cops and others. If we had something that was detrimental to an ongoing investigation, we would hold it until it was clear, then the cops would take us along and we would get an exclusive of the arrest, etc.

Then the cops would feed some extra good stuff in following weeks in return.

This NYT stuff is BS!!!!!!
