Media Matters for America Bestows 'Misinformer of the Year' Award on Chris Matthews
US Newswire ^ | 12/23/05 | Press Release

Posted on 12/23/2005 12:45:16 PM PST by ncountylee

WASHINGTON, Dec. 23 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Media Matters for America today announced the winner of its 2005 "Misinformer of the Year" award. After much deliberation and a thorough -- and somewhat painful --review of the many distortions, false statements, and instances of misinformation we have corrected during the year, MSNBC's Chris Matthews takes home the prize.

In 2005, Matthews called the majority of his fellow Americans "real whack-jobs"; praised a speech by President Bush as "brilliant" even before it was delivered; said that Bush sometimes "glimmers" with "sunny nobility"; and gushed at having his picture taken with the president, adding that Bush "belongs on Mount Rushmore." Matthews made false claims about Democrats, former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, Iraqi elections, Catholics, and the Iraqi insurgency, and he derided people with sneering insults, calling them "witchy" and "thimble-wit(s)."

"Last year, we named Bill O'Reilly the 'Misinformer of the Year.' O'Reilly remained true to his roots and continued to spread conservative misinformation in 2005," said David Brock, President and CEO of Media Matters. "However, Chris Matthews is viewed by many as a trustworthy source of information, which makes his egregious statements and inaccuracies even more astonishing. We will continue to monitor Matthews's shows and point out every instance of conservative misinformation."

Matthews -- host of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews and NBC's syndicated program The Chris Matthews Show -- is a former presidential speechwriter and congressional staffer, a best- selling author, and recipient of The Washington Post's "Crystal Ball" award for his successful predictions of U.S. presidential elections. In addition, he can now claim the title of 2005 "Misinformer of the Year."

Media Matters for America has compiled a list of some of his most outrageous, false, and misleading claims of 2005. Without further ado, let's play hardball:

Matthews probably uses his toilet paper twice, too.

And, he still stinks.

That's pathetic.

He's a slob. There were 2000 people there. No one goes out like that. Very telling about his personality.

"THE "David Brock"??"

Which one would that be? I knew the old one quite well, so perhaps I can answer your question.

This is the same Chris Matthews that spent the whole Fall trying to convince his audience we need to leave Iraq and that the Administration lied/hyped/misled the public about Iraq.

MSNBC's Chris Matthews takes home the prize

I think they mean, "takes with him back to the swampy cesspool from which he emanated."

One night he went on a tirade--I wanted to break his nose. It was about Iraq. Then all of a sudden--he puts on this phony, soothing voice (just like Tokyo Rose) and says "Oh, those poor boys over there. They are dying. They are losing limbs. And it's Christmas."

If ever I wanted to beat a guy senseless--it was at that moment.

He is a real POS.
Haven't watched one minute of him since the recount in 2000.
Look at what NBC wants us to listen to.
Holy Cross grad worked for Tip ONeil and wrote speeches Jimmah Chatah.
Then writes for the San Fran Chronicle.
He thinks and says what these jobs made him.

I think Matthews and O'Reilly are both fools of similar magnitude.

He does deserve the title, but not for the reasons stated in the release.

O'Reilly sometimes gets it right, and he is not stupid, but when he is wrong it is painful to see, especially when he goes after "big oil."

I just started watching Prissy again after dropping his show after the 2000 election. When he started literally crying that Gore was "Lincoln est " in his concession speech

The reason is simple:

His show has become a caricature of a cable news show. It's like watching a modern version of Joseph Goebbels propaganda class 101. It's simply amazing what he try to pass off as news that in no way remotely resembles truth.

Prissy really thinks he can repeat the lies often enough it will become truth.
