Dec. 21, 2005 - Back in the 1980s, when I was living in Johannesburg and reporting on apartheid South Africa, a white neighbor proffered a tasteless confession. She was "quite relieved," she told me, that new media restrictions prohibited our reporting on government repression. No matter that Pretoria was detaining tens of thousands of people without real evidence of wrongdoing. No matter that many of them, including children, were being torturedsometimes to death. No matter that government hit squads were killing political opponents. No matter that police were shooting into crowds of black civilians protesting against their disenfranchisement. "It's so nice," confided my neighbor, "not to open the papers and read all that bad news."
I thought about that neighbor this week, as reports dribbled out about President George W. Bush's sanctioning of warrantless eavesdropping on American conversations.

Remember, being paranoid doesn't mean you are wrong and in this case you are right.
.... I believe these waves of media and political negativism are coordinated.
Where's the outrage? Simple: no one reads Newsweak.
Newsweek jumped the shark so long ago, its unmeasurable.
That's pretty much the definition of free debate, you brain dead idiot.
Maybe its because we are not outraged... spy on the terrorists...seek them out and destroy them...by any means necessary.
Be patient, Newsweek is losing circulation at an alarming rate. Ad revenue is way down. At this rate this third rate magazine will be out of business and will take its crew down with it.
If you haven't read Alter's hit piece this week you've gotta check it out - he basically accuses Bush of crimes so vicious against the American people that he essentially is pushing for execution, I think. At first it made my blood boil, but realizing the childishness and vacuity of his arguments made me smile with delight as I foresaw Newsweak's reputation in it's dying throes. They have gone from scurrilous to scandoulous - and they don't care. It is the most poorly managed "news" agency going, I expect them to go insolvent within the next year.
Newsweak is nothing but leftwing garbage! Filthy dirty garbage!
I recall that either Howard Kurtz and/or Howard Fineman at Newsweak high fived people in the office when that first bunko exit poll (60% women, all inner city respondants) showing that Kerry would win. I remember preparing myself for a Kerry presidency when the first reports from places like NRO said those polls were poorly done and inacccurate; ergo Bush went on to win a crushing victory.
More Apartheid atrocities, just like the Israelis are committing with their "genocidal Wall".
ADd revenues are in the toilet.
Thanks for the good news.
