Florida voters will certainly miss this governor... BTW, that photo above is from
his homepage, not from the Sentinel article.

Jeb Bush is just another example of the fact that the Bush familily has an overabundance of something that the Clintons, Kennedys and Kerrys would know if they tripped over it...

Jeb never really impressed me, until now. It takes some balls to throw off the lobbyist yoke.

So buying politicians will require a bit more creativity in the future.

"The prohibition on free meals, drinks and other gifts brings Florida into the forefront of states with the strictest gift prohibitions in the nation, experts say." Kudos to Jeb and the Fla Reps. Now, can we get this replicated at ALL levels of Gov't?

When I worked with the Broward County Legislative Delegation in the early 80's we would sponsor "Broward Days" - an event for the legislators that included stone crab buffets, lots of beer and wine, bands, and general partying. It was hugely expensive and was generally underwritten by people like the Broward Tourism Development Council, the Broward Country Chamber of Commerce, etc.
This party, and many others like it, is now illegal.
The people who worked at the catering companies, the bands and DJ's, the venues, are all going to be sh!t out of luck. I didn't see these events as buying votes as much as buying goodwill. I don't think a party will make someone vote your way, but it gave you a good opportunity to present your case.
Bribery is wrong and providing trips to Hawaii, expensive meals, jewelry, and such are over the top, illegal and unacceptable. A bus trip to bring legislators to Pahokie to view hurricane damage paid for by the Pahokie Kiwanis is now also illegal and treated the same way.
I am all for reform, but an outright ban is going to have unintended consequences.

One thing I've always thought about lobbyists.. *IF* the companies didn't have them, they'd be able to charge MUCH MUCH LESS for their goods/services, and therefore raise profits.
Lobbyists outnumber Florida's 160 legislators by more than 12 to 1, and they spent more than $3 million in the first six months of this year to influence legislation.

I wish people learn once and for all that money is not a form of free speech. The purpose of free speech was to give everyone an equal right it what happens with our country. Money does not give everyone that equal right.
The problem with money is that the more you have the more say you have.. and that should never be the case in a country as great as ours.
