SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is installing a Republican campaign and public relations strategist as his new communications director, part of a broader staff shake-up.

Adam Mendelsohn will succeed Rob Stutzman, an influential advisor who will leave government to open a private political consulting business and to work on Schwarzenegger's reelection.

Mendelsohn comes from the DCI Group, a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying and public affairs firm. He was press secretary to Bruce McPherson, then a Republican state senator, in McPherson's losing bid for the lieutenant governor's seat in 2002. McPherson is now secretary of state. Mendelsohn also worked for Republican Matt Fong, who lost a U.S. Senate bid to Barbara Boxer in 1998.

Mendelsohn's appointment came with the recommendation of First Lady Maria Shriver, who consulted friends and contacts in the media about the communications director position, according to members of the Schwarzenegger administration who spoke on condition of anonymity because the appointment had not been formally announced.

These are the posts that few review and much is missed. Keep on digging and publishing. The totality of these seemingly unrelated changes paints an accurate portrait of California politics for the first eleven months of 2006 ... for those who wish to learn and discern.

Schwarzenegger names new communications directorAssociated Press

SACRAMENTO - A 31-year-old campaign and public relations consultant will become Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's communications director, the governor announced Tuesday.

Adam Mendelsohn has worked on several high-profile Republican campaigns including Lamar Alexander's run for president in 2000, Matt Fong's campaign for U.S. Senate in 1998 and Bruce McPherson's 2002 campaign for lieutenant governor. Most recently Mendelsohn served as a vice president for the DCI Group, a Washington D.C. firm closely linked to the Republican National Party that does both campaign and public affairs consulting.

He replaces Rob Stutzman, who has said he will return to private consulting while also working for Schwarzenegger's re-election campaign.

The appointment is part of a shake up in the administration following the governor's disastrous loss in the November special election. Besides Stutzman, the governor has also replaced his chief of staff and cabinet secretary.

Mendelsohn is a Republican. His appointment does not require
