When anti-war activists set their sights on U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris' Sarasota office last week, they were hoping to send a strong message to the Longboat Key Republican about their opposition to the Iraq war.
But the 1960s it wasn't.
Instead, six well-mannered protesters arrived, and had to borrow Harris' photocopier to provide the media with copies of their protest letter.
"We would have liked to see more people," said Sarasota resident Richard Ferris, one of the six.
He said people have jobs and probably just couldn't make it to the lunchtime event on Wednesday.Another protester, Shirley Bascom of Venice, said attendance may have been low because people may not be feeling the war's direct impact, especially if they don't have friends or relatives in the war, as she does. Bascom said her grandson is about to start his third tour of duty in Iraq.
Officials with MoveOn.Org, which organized the event, had expected more than 25 residents in Harris' five-county district to show up to deliver petitions urging a timetable to withdraw troops by the end of 2006.
Republicans say the rally probably shows that most Americans, while they may be uncomfortable with the direction of the war, see that pulling out troops too quickly could cause the Middle East to descend into greater chaos.
"Most people understand that, that's why there were only six people there out of a county of more than 350,000 people," said Sarasota Republican Party Chairman Bob Waechter.
The MoveOn protesters disagree. They say most Americans are on their side, despite the smaller-than-expected protest.
A spokeswoman for Harris said the congresswoman wants to bring the troops home soon too, but not before they have completed their mission.
Nice move Harris. Sell them as much rope as they want. :)
The staff also probably invited them to take a seat and have a little lemonade. Moonbats are puzzlee by hospitality!
"The MoveOn protesters disagree. They say most Americans are on their side, despite the smaller-than-expected protest."
Is that a cry for help or what?! (As in, PLEASE help me - I can't face the fact that I'm an ignorant, hypocritical, misguided, reviled poseur who everyone in the world sees right through!)
Check that claim. My brother is finishing up his second tour and he says third tours that are not volunteered for by the soldier are pretty rare.
The difference between Vietnam protesters and these folks. But couldn't they at least pass up lunch for a little protest? Where are the jobless protesters of days gone by? I guess college is more important that protesting against the Iraq war.
1. They believe the majority of Americans believe as they do.
2. The mainstream media is almost totally in the right wing camp. I know, I know. But that's what they believe.
3. They are smarter than everryone else.
4. They are more moral than everyone else.
5. They are living in pre-WWII Nazi Germany.
Keeping these points in mind aids in interpreting their behavior and can even help predict what they will do next (assuming you're interested).
Just took a quick look at Dummieland and so no mention of these dedicated few at the protest. I will look later on but I am predicting they will studiously avoid all mention of it.
6. They believe they speak for everyone else.
IMO there is some truth to this, but only because of the Moonbats and their enablers.
Maybe Bascom is the reason he preferred to stay in Iraq?
I remember several years ago, NOW was having a conference in California. The national news was all over it...a THOUSAND women from "all over the country" were there for the conference!
That same weekend, I attended a Southern Baptist ladies retreat in East Texas. Twelve hundred ladies showed up from just the surrounding area. No news organizations reported it.
We got a huge laugh out of that.
Just the other night I went out to eat with a group of fellow homeschooling moms...twelve of us showed up for that! No news coverage of that!
There are lefty homeschooling parents who hang out over on DU. They spend 75% of their time defending themselves against the other moonbats who accuse them of being government-hating right wingers. They also treat lib professing Christians pretty poorly over there, too.
" Ishtar " outdraws moveon.org.
" Gigli " can get a bigger crowd than moveon.org.
It's now been 2 and 1/2 years since our victory in Iraq and the appeasement based isolationist liberals have once again failed to make their case.
I call them the "wussie left." They may as well be French, since they want to surrender so much.
