The Diver in question was I believe Robert Stetham (sp). He attempted to hide his ID Card as the highjackers were targeting individuals with "military style" haircuts, but was discovered none-the-less. Easier to ID then rather than nowadays.

He was apparently treated very poorly before they killed him and (I seem to recall)dumped him onto the Tarmac of the airport. Yeah, ... just say something about how we are torturing terrorists!

I think they made a movie based on the events. If true, they beat the man half to death before putting a bullet in his brain.
