St. Louis is going with Diebold Election Systems

The St. Louis Election Board has chosen Diebold Election Systems to provide a new hybrid voting system for the city. Officials said they were impressed by the firm's operations and equipment.

The decision expands Diebold's urban presence in Missouri. The firm recently was awarded voting-system contracts in St. Charles County and Kansas City and already has voting machines in place in Jefferson County.

Diebold also is among the finalists in St. Louis County, the state's largest voting jurisdiction, which expects to announce its decision this week.

Election Board chairman Ed Martin said the three-person panel of two Republicans and one Democrat voted unanimously during a closed session Monday.

Interesting that Democrats complain about this system, then adopt it rather than cheaper and more reliable optically scanned ballots.

I thought Diebold voting machines were the ones build from Karl Rove's stem cells.

True. I think they really didn't believe these machines could be easily manipulated to yield false results, so they thought they'd have to actually have to get more votes to win. Hence their opposition to digital voting. Now that it's apparent that these machines can be manipulated fairly easily, they're much more acceptable to Democrats.

That's my impression. It's almost impossible to manipulate optical ballots. They're sequentially numbered so you can match them to the sign-in logs. If the machine can't read them it's easy for a human to interpret intent.

The problem with the Diebold machines is that they can be made to yield false results at the whims of those who control them, and have been proven to be easily tamperable with no trace time and time again throughout the country. I believe it was some place in Florida that just recently had an independant tester come in to test the Diebold voting machines only to find that it was rather trivial to change the results reported by the machine.
