'It just burst and it went right down'
Miami Herald ^ | December 20, 2005 | Matthew Pinzer

A Chalk's seaplane burst into flames over South Beach on Monday, killing all 20 people on board -- including three infants -- and plummeting into the ocean so close to shore that lifeguards, surfers and Jet Skiers were the first on the scene.

The cause of the crash remained unknown, but witnesses said the plane's rear half exploded, shearing off the left wing and sending the flight tumbling to the sea shortly after its 2:30 p.m. takeoff from Watson Island.

Very sad story. I hope Chalks Airlines, which has been operating in this area since the early days of flight, can survive this, one sentence in the article lets you know that the trial lawyers are already circling.

I really feel for the people of Bimini as well, apparently most of the passengers were from there.

On several occasions I have watched Chalk's seaplanes take off and land while watching from a cruise ship. A really nice experience. It is so sad that this happened. God help them for the terror which they probably went through.

I too have loved seeing those old Mallards still in service.

I believe Ossie was murdered some years ago, I'm not sure which of the sons is running the Compleat Angler these days.

An interesting article on the Brown family here, in the hippie rag, New Times:

What was in the rear of the plane that could explode? Was it mechanical failure, an improperly stowed piece of cargo (ala ValueJet), or did someone on the plane have enemies?

I picked up that t-short, years ago in my single days, when I hung out at the Angler during some diving down there.

I had some 'plainin to do to the wife last year when my son found it and wore it one day...
