Does anyone know why it took so long to complete his execution? I've heard snippets; but that's all I've found.

I have no idea why it took so long. The murder happened in the 1970's. I think you could have a process where the inmate is given plenty of chance to appeal (as the DP is very serious and should be fully litigated) any problem areas and the whole case is decided in say no more than five years. I think a 1984 or 1985 execution would have been very reasonable.
