Trouble in the wind

Nantucket Sound, a slice of water wedged between the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket and Cape Cod on the mainland, is a lovely place. It’s chock full of fish and, when it’s not cold as all get-out, tourists. And there was a time, not too long ago, when those in favor of alternative energy thought Nantucket Sound would also be the home to a huge offshore wind farm. Giant wind turbines, some of them 420 feet tall, were scheduled to be scattered around a 24-square-mile area.

Then Congress, or rather a congressman from oil-rich Alaska, stepped in to effectively kill the whole thing. The weapon, as usual, was a seemingly unrelated bill — in this instance the Coast Guard budget bill — with restrictions so severe as to end the entire wind farm venture.

There’s nothing surprising about that. Many of our rulers in Congress are fond of talking about the importance of energy independence out of one side of their mouth while bad-mouthing it out the other.

What is surprising is where the other opposition is coming from. While Greenpeace, a darling of the left, is all excited about the project, liberal Sen. Ted Kennedy doesn’t want anything to do with it. He and others critics, many of them residents of Cape Cod and surrounding islands, say the sound is an inappropriate place for such a large project. It might scare all those tourists away.

And the other Kennedy, with that awful voice, is silent too.

Teddy is always looking out for the little guy...sheesh.
The only large projects Teddy has ever been against have been military.

I think every Commie enviornmental wacko blue state should be forced by congress to have a minimum of 5 million energy producing windmills. We'll call the legislation the poetic justice act.
