Can you please explain what he's currently ever said/done that leaves you with that conclusion. I say current as Matthews has either changed his stripes since 2000 or isn't afraid to wear his bias on his sleeve.
He comes from Philly, from a blue-collar family, his brother is or was a cop, I think. His patriotism is palpable.
As for an example: The Bush on Rushmore quote is one, and he seemed (almost) genuinely furious with the Times for "raining on Bush's parade" with the -wiretap-without-warrant retread.
Matthews' cognitive dissonance is sometimes very obvious....
