We have no children, and likely won't start having kids for a few years yet. Our cat is much-loved and well cared-for. Yeah, she's getting a $70 kitty condo for Christmas this year. Plus, my sister in law and brother in law's dog will get some nice treats and toys from her "aunt and uncle". We're really looking forward to adopting a dog next year once we own a house.

If it came down to a pet needing something, or us doing something non-essential, we'd choose the pet. I was raised in a family where our dogs were treated like a part of the family, and are given love and kindness. Our cat is the same way.

I get so much in return from them that I even find myself getting lonesome when I'm on a trip and they're not with me.
