The radical fringe group known as BAMN (By Any Means Necessary) sent two busloads of Detroit school kids to Lansing Wednesday, ostensibly because their futures depended on the actions at a meeting of the State Board of Canvassers that they attended.
While skipping a chance to learn in a classroom, and perhaps improve their grades so they might get accepted at a major college, the students were drawn into a raucous, verbal assault on public officials. Two officials shriveled in cowardice at the sight -- and refused to uphold state laws.
The issue is the effort by a group called the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative to have Michigan voters decide in November of 2006 whether our state Constitution should be amended to ban affirmative action practices in hiring by state government and in the acceptance of applicants to state universities.
Agree or disagree with the proposal, it has followed the legal process for ballot initiatives.
The Board of Canvassers was meeting under two court orders to simply place the issue before voters next fall after MCRI's petitions were validated for the proper amount of signatures. With three votes needed to accomplish this, the two Republican members, Chairwoman Katherine DeGrow and Lyn Bankes, both voted yes.
One Democrat, Paul Mitchell, ignored the legitimate order of the Michigan Court of Appeals and voted no, while his fellow Democrat, Doyle O'Connor, did not vote.
BAMN accomplished its mission, but also underlined again the problem with its racist socialist policies. Spokeswoman Shanta Driver said the students' futures depended on the board's actions.
Her message to these minority students is they can't achieve success through hard work. They can only succeed by special treatment based on race (isn't that what Rosa Parks fought?).
This is a repugnant suggestion that minority students and Michigan residents are a dim lot.
Aware that polls have shown about 60 percent support for the proposal, BAMN wants to decide the issue for all of us by imposing its will and denying our constitutional right to vote.
But perhaps most startling is the disinterest of Gov. Jennifer Granholm in protecting the state Constitution, which she swore to uphold when she took office.
The governor's spokeswoman, Liz Boyd, said Granholm was "way too busy" to address this issue when I sought comment Thursday. "This isn't even on our radar screen," Boyd explained.
By her silence, Granholm has aligned herself with the radical BAMN and, by extension, has sent every Michigan resident the same message these anarchists are sending: You're going to vote the wrong way on this issue, so let us decide it for you.
I hope the school kids were paying close attention. The same rights they think they were fighting for were being denied to Michiganians. And the state's most important leader didn't care.

I can't figure out why Granholm is so popular in Michigan. Seems like she's gotta be the worst Governor in Michigan history, no matter what the criteria.
Can you say "BLANCO CLONE"?
"I can't figure out why Granholm is so popular in Michigan."
She isn't, it's just that our liberals are true believer DUmmie type liberals who have never seen a ballot box they can't stuff. Pathetic republicans just sit back and watch it happen.
Wow, that's a big brush your painting with. Perhaps you should go and look what our choice was during the last govenatorial election was.
I take comfort in knowing she'll be a one term govenor. She's proven to the UAW her true colors, and it's rumored the right side may have a viable candidate for the next election.
I wouldn't paint a barn with a toothbrush.
The WSJ stated last week that Michigan is the only state not to show job growth this year. WOW
She is.....
Can you say "never worked minorities, seldom working minorities and UAW morons of all ethnic persuasions?
There is a reason why Bush lost in Michigan but it ain't due to intelligence and common sense........
I live in michigan and every single person I talk to (republican, democrate or other) absolutely HATE GRANHOLM!!
She will NOT get reelected. You can take that to the bank!
She screwed over the smokers with the 75Cent tax hike, she has run our economy into the crapper and everything she wants or tries to do pisses off the people!
I only have a guess on why she won. When she visited the shop I worked at, the guys wern't interested in her politics, just that she was blond and cute.
Granholm alert!!!
Thanks. In 2006 I think she'll be sent packing with her carpet bag back to Canada. :')
I didn't vote for her. Who is she popular with?
The Detroit crowd of lemmings and formerly the UAW.
The dancing reminded me of a scene from the new King Kong movie.
I'd rather be stuck with him for a term than HER for another.
Thanks for the head's up on the state board.
