Hoping to get an Xbox 360 in time for Christmas? It may pay to be in good with Santa Claus, according to PJ McNealy of American Technology Research.

McNealy believes that Microsoft intentionally kept supply projections low in hopes of overshooting its target come the end of the month, reports Reuters.

However, McNealy thinks the plan may have backfired.

"We believe that (Microsoft) has tried to keep expectations low for retailers this holiday with the hopes of over-delivering. We believe that over-delivering is unlikely at this point," McNealy told Reuters.

All is not without hope for 360 hunters, though. McNealy predicts 300,000 next-gen consoles will hit the market next week, bringing his projection of worldwide units shipped to near 1 million. That number is still far below his initial assumption of 1.5 to 1.8 million Xbox 360s through retail by the end of 2005.

As far as the software side goes, McNealy predicts further price cuts and deals over the next 12 days leading up to Christmas. He also believes that while recovering slightly from a less-than-stellar October and November is a possibility, any chance of moving beyond expectations is "unlikely."

Microsoft rushed this product to market to beat Sony and to capitalize on the Christmas rush. There aren't nearly enough to meet the demand. And the hype helps sell more.

I say part artificial shortage and part production problems.

Microsoft should concentrate on a particular region first.

Release in North America first, Japan 3-6 months later and then Europe for example.

Nintendo and Sony does this well. Of course Japan gets everything first for obvious reasons.

The rumor I have been hearing is that mass quantities were rerouted to Japan for the premier there, where they now sit like the ugly dogs in the pound. Also, word is that Best Buy has a stock of them saved up for a sort of 'Second Debut' before Christmas. Or you could hit EBay.

Sorry, but you are screwed.

Me? I've got two.

I paid kids to stand in line for me, so I was able to get a second one for my girlfriend's brother for Christmas. Since using mine, I've dumped the girlfriend and kept the second 360.

There is going to be a small Christmas shipment, but your best bet is to pay big bucks on EBay if you REALLY want one.

I've heard that Best Buy will have new shipments on sale the morning of the 18th, but once they are sold out, that's it.

Son in law ordered one around Tgiving, from a place near his home in Colorado. It arrived last week.

Guess you ought to keep checking in your area.

It's the old supply and demand game. Microsoft can make more money as people become desperate for this new toy, and will pay the going price or more for it. After the holidays, the product will be more widely available and they might even drop the price a bit. There will also be knock-offs available for sure.

Every single year, there is a new "must-have" TOY that drives shoppers berserk. The Xbox is equal to the Cabbage Patch Doll of the 1980s.

I do wish the libnuts would explain why everyone seems to have so much money lately that they can afford the Xbox...LOL. I thought we were all in soup kitchen lines!

Best Buy will have some for sale tomorrow morning. Each store has a different amount to sell, anywhere from 25 to 60 per store. Good luck though as the lines are already forming.
