Egyptian Student Set for Trial in March (Re: DVD "How to Look & Act Like A Pilot" and Airport Maps)

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - An illegal immigrant from Egypt, charged in Memphis with using a fake Social Security number, is set for trial in March.

A federal judge put 29-year-old Mahmoud Maawad on the court's March docket today without setting a specific trial date.

Maawad has drawn attention because at the time of his arrest in September he possessed a DVD on "how to look and act like a pilot" and a map of the Memphis airport.

Authorities have said they have no evidence linking Maawad to terrorists but want to keep him behind bars, anyway, until he goes to trial. He is being held without bond.

At a brief hearing Thursday, Maawad complained to Judge Bernice Donald that he is being held in isolation away from other prison inmates. He also said he wants to go to trial as soon as possible.

He groaned loudly when the judge said that would be in March.

Authorities say Maawad, who was registered as a student at the University of Memphis, has been in the United States illegally since 1999.

Point #1 the constitutional provision of a speedy trial only applies to American Citizens!! Point #2 I think they should let him out into the general population with a sign around his neck proclaiming him as a terror suspect. He won't make it to March. Point #3 Why is he still in this country anyway? He should be deported back to Egypt where they can use their very effective brand of justice on him.

"Authorities say Maawad, who was registered as a student at the University of Memphis, has been in the United States illegally since 1999."

We no longer will accept any excuses for allowing illegal immigration.

When he goes to prison, put him somewhere so that the general population will take good care of him.

Good Grief! Islamoslimes are always complaining, moaning and whining about any circumstance. We know that. But what gives them the idea they can dictate legal procedure!

If the US citizens shout loudly and long enough, it can be stopped.

Vote out any politician who won't support strong measures to stop illegal immigration, Republicans included.

Maybe to the point where a mass demonstration is the only solution.

Wonder if the millions would show up?

A 29-year-old former University of Memphis student, indicted for using a false Social Security number, will go to trial in March.

Mahmoud Maawad had a pilot's jacket and a DVD, "How an Airline Captain Should Look and Act," among other pilot-training material when FBI agents raided his apartment on Mynders near the University of Memphis on Sept. 9.

"I'm not guilty one million times," Maawad told U.S. Dist. Court Judge Bernice Donald. "I want a trial, yes. March? This is a very long time."

Maawad, who added that he wanted a speedier trial, spoke on a videoconferencing screen from the West Tennessee Detention Facility in Mason where he's been held since his arrest.

He said he was unfairly being kept in segregation and that he was sick and couldn't get medical attention. Donald said she would pass his concerns on to federal marshals.

He also complained that Asst. U.S. Atty. Steve Parker gave him "an irritated look" and said he would add more charges when Maawad refused to plead guilty at a hearing in October.

Maawad, who is from Egypt, has been in the country illegally since 1999 and has used a false Social Security number to enroll at the University of Memphis, to get utilities at his apartment and when he was arrested for selling beer to a minor last spring, an indictment alleges.

Parker has said he doesn't know if Maawad is a terrorist or is connected to any terror group, but that "he wants to get behind the wheel of an aircraft."

The defendant told authorities a friend would support him since he can't work legally, but when court employees tried to reach that friend the telephone was disconnected.

Between April and August he ordered $3,000 in aviation materials, including DVDs, a pilot's coat and hat and a chart of the Memphis airport terminal area from a pilot store in San Diego.

When the company didn't receive payment on $2,500 worth of materials, employees called the FBI.

Donald did not set a trial date, but put Maawad's case on the March docket.

Not a good idea...the prison are infested with islamics lead by visiting mullahs.

They will probably make this guy the prayer leader.

Why does just about everybody want these terrorists deported?

All that does is cut them loose to continue the mission...

Lock 'em up for life or execute them!

I prefer the second choice for them.

I appreciate the need for the patriot act, believe me, but I must say I have mixed feelings about the over all process.
And this admittance is mostly because I have not downloaded a written description in detail and put some honest time into understanding which clauses are being objected to. So until I do that I am keeping my mouth shut. I do not trust what I hear on the boob tube from either side of the debate at this point in time.
