Iraqis have faced down terrorists, elected a constitutional assembly and approved a constitution. On Wednesday, they elected a permanent national government.
I dipped my finger in purple ink to show my solidarity with liberty-seeking Iraqis and with our troops for risking their lives on the front lines of freedom. Together with Iraqi forces, they put to shame those who said it couldnt be done.
More than 15 million Iraqis voting for a parliament sure sounds like democracy to me. We are making progress in Iraq. The Iraqis believe this too. Further, they are doing their part: rebuilding their country, strengthening their economy and, slowly but surely, taking up their own defense.
Indeed, most of the casualties in the battle for Iraq are not Americans, but Iraqi civilians, soldiers and police. The war in Iraq is a war of which every American can and should be proud. I can say with absolute certainty that Iraq and the world are better off without Saddam Hussein.
For anyone who hasnt been paying attention, lets recap: Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait; gassed, tortured, raped and killed his own people; harbored terrorists; supported terrorism; and broke every one of his commitments to the U.N. Husseins Iraq was a despotic regime seeking weapons of mass destruction.
Now is clearly not the time to lose our nerve. Yet that is what liberal elites in this country want to do. Fearing success, they have tried to demagogue and minimize American efforts.
Most Democrats do not have a plan for victory, a plan to fight the global war on terror or even a coherent position their party can articulate. Out of the cacophony of their disgruntled complaints rises only one voice that I must commend: Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.
Recently he wrote: It is time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge that he will be Commander in Chief for three more critical years, and that in matters of war we undermine Presidential credibility at our nations peril.
It used to be that the debate on foreign policy stopped at our shores. Loyal opposition meant both parties stood shoulder to shoulder against foreign threats. Not today. Howard Deans comments that we cannot win in Iraq gave aid and comfort to the enemy.
America will not win or lose this battle in Baghdad or Fallujah.
This battle will be won or lost on the floors of the U.S. Congress. The battle for Iraq will be lost by people like Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Baghdad Jim McDermott, who want immediate retreat. Liberals, for nothing but personal political gain, seek to undermine our troops and our success.
President Bush has proved that he has the resolve to see this conflict through, but I am less sure about my liberal colleagues.
The success of terrorism depends on the accommodation of free people the willingness of free societies to tolerate a certain level of tyranny in the world.
Like it or not, America has staked its reputation and our freedom on the success in Iraq. Weve pledged our might to defeating the small band of terrorists. Democrats are still saying it cant be done.
Iraqis have proved with their historic vote for freedom that democracy can thrive in the Middle East.

"Fearing success". That says it about the libs. Pathetic if it weren't so sickening and dangerous.
Why haven't more republicans in congress stood up and said this same thing? Out loud and repeatedly. Like every day. The truth will defeat the DIMs if more republicans have the spine to say it.

Great post.
here is the quote that stood out.
The insurgents clearly still enjoy widespread support in Fallujah, but are mentioned only indirectly and always as the muqawama resistance rarely as terrorists.
One youth, giving his name only as Firas, proclaimed their achievements. Because of the resistance the Democratic Party in America has started calling to withdraw US troops from Iraq, he said, smiling. Thats what the resistance has achieved.
This is what the Rats want to cut and run from:
