Ex-state senator surrenders himself to federal prison (Georgia)

Former state Sen. Charles Walker surrendered himself to a federal prison on Thursday afternoon after a last-minute appeal to federal judges failed.

Walker was sentenced this month to more than 10 years in federal prison for tax evasion, mail fraud and conspiracy charges.

He and his attorneys hoped an emergency petition with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals would allow him to remain free on bond until judges made a ruling, but the request was denied Wednesday.

Once one of the most powerful legislators in Georgia, the Augusta Democrat was convicted in June of 127 of 137 crimes and immediately stripped of the state Senate seat he had just regained.

Walker, the state Senate's former Democratic majority leader, was ordered to serve 121 months in prison for charges that included illegally profiting from advertisers of his Augusta newspaper, defrauding campaign contributors and illegally doing business with the state through two public hospitals.

He was also charged with walking away with more than $400,000 from a charity football game, leaving "only the crumbs" for scholarships for students, said Judge Dudley Bowen Jr.

Bowen had allowed Walker to remain free on bond after his conviction and after sentencing, but ordered him to begin his incarceration today

Convicted in June and still walking free in December? Out on bond? Isn't bond and bail only for people who have not been convicted?

White color federal criminals are frequently allowed to run around loose between sentencing and their report date. It actually seems to work fairly well.
