Well, Baltic bypass pipeline construction will take couple years, maybe more. This is the time window [pretty short one] in which the Baltics, Ukraine and Poland better achieve a measure of energy independence. Nuke plants, coal, coal gasification plants- all these could be built in a few years. Beyond that they will need crash economic development programs [could take a generation - 25 years]. Neither Japan, nor Taiwan, nor South Korea have significant fossil fuel deposits - but they are sufficiently developed economically to buy these.

GS is welcomed home. Not surprising in the least. The FRkomrades will be responding soon, and that will be very interesting, to say the least. Good thread post, Tailgunner Joe!

Let's see, the Ukraine is objecting to paying the price increase from $50 to $160 per 1,000 cubic meters for gas. The Russians are going to be collecting $255 from the other European countries in 2006. It appears to me Russia is being more than fair to the Ukraine.

The split of the USSR was a facade to simply retool with a better economic system after Communism failed so disastrously. Their ambitions haven't changed and they are recapturing those former Republics that were foolish enough to believe the split was real.
We had better heed that warning.
