For the life of me, I can't think of a single reason, given this is Cuba and they are doing this on foreign soil in a time of war, for the military not to mow these people down with a machine gun and throw their bodies into the ocean as enemy combatants.

I struggle with this, but I can find one single reason: it's Christmas, a time of Peace and Goodwill to all. They are poor, misguided fools, on a fool's errand, and destined to come to a fool's end. 'Tis a time of Miracles, for Dreams to come true.
If they demand Access, I say give it to 'em. Orange Jump-suits and all, as much as they want -- and then some.
See if they still like these Saintly terrorist suspects after a few nights of "Christmas Cheer" Muslim-Terrorist-Style.

If I remember where is group of socialist fanatics are protesting, the marines guarding the base cant do a thing, for they are on the Cuban side of the DMZ around GITMO. There is about a hundred yard deep perimeter of fences, cacti and land mines between the protesters and the marines with a single track dirt path for a way through the minefield to the US gate for the Cuban workers (pre-1964 hires) who are allowed to enter the base. I don't know if they were allowed to come down that track to protest at the gate to the base (a guard tower overlooks the gate about a 75 to 100 yards away.) It's been a while since I was there.
This must be a great coup for Castro to print pictures of these folks in their propaganda, yellow press and release to the socialist media around the world.
