I read an interesting article once that described the same sort of behavior in settlements in the American West that didn't include women (e.g., mining camps) that contrasted them to settlements with women and families. It was women who used to value chastity because they knew that was how to get men to respect them. It was women, not men, who insisted on outlawing prostitution because they knew that it encouraged men to look away from their wives and families. And it was women who insisted on clean streets and law and order. Give men free access to cheap women who don't demand that they shape up (along with pornography, strip clubs, etc.) and you wind up with the mining camp mentality. Men don't step up and grow up unless the situation or someone else expects them to. Men are quite happy being eternal children so long as others are willing to let them act like babies.
