Great News for Lynn Swann and Team 88!
According to a Quinnipiac University Poll of registered Republicans released December 13, if the race for the Republican nomination for Governor were held today, Lynn Swann would defeat Bill Scranton, Jeff Piccola and Jim Panyard by a wide margin.
The survey showed Piccola with 5% of the vote, Panyard with 2%, Scranton with 23%, and Lynn Swann out in front with 31%. Furthermore, Lynn has increased his lead over Bill Scranton by 5 points since October 5.
This is a clear sign that the more Lynn Swann travels across our state, the more Pennsylvanians are encouraging him to run for Governor in 2006. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement from Lynn on his plans!

miss Swan???
Sorry, I can't bring myself to vote for a USC grad.
Only numbers I care about in the next Gov race, is which republican is going to carry some votes in Philly... because they are going to own the state other than that area, with perhaps a small margin going Dem in Allegheny County.. but Rendell is absolutely dispised here.. so its going to be, can the R candidate get enough votes out of Philly to get rid of fast eddie...who's administration has been an absolute disaster, by any measureable means.
Swann is black, so he definately could upset the status quo in Philly, assuming they don't view him as an uncle tom.
You mean like Lt. Gov Michael Steele (Maryland)? Don't put it past the Philly Democratic political machine to act just like their brothers in Maryland (throwing oreo cookies & the like).
"assuming they don't view him as an uncle tom."
Oh, I'm sure he'll be viewed that way, he wants to cut taxes and freeze government spending and work to create a more hospitable business climate in PA. Horrors!
Rendell is (inexplicably) overwhelmingly popular in Philly, I don't think anyone has much of a shot there, but Swann leads the polls in the heavily Democratic Pittsburgh area and the rest of the state is red. It's a longshot, the Philly numbers are tough to overcome, but it would be great if he could pull off the upset.
Swann is the only one I see right now with a shot at doing it.
Exactly... A republican will not win Philly, but they cannot lose philly by more than about 250k votes and win the state...
Fact is Pa is a HUGELY conservative state, with the sole exception of Philly.
Pittsburgh is a largely conservative region, but still has a lot of old Democrats left overs from the FDR days and mindsets.. but its definately shifting here... If trends continue Allegheny County will be the only county in SWPA that will vote Dem... and with its declining population it will have ever less pull.. so Philly is the only reasons Dems can win Statewide...
So all we need is a R that doesn't lose Philly by too wide of a margin and you have the state. Swann seems the only likely candidate in the hunt right now with a chance... sadly Philly region is a glorified suburb of NYC, so its full of folks whos views VASTLY oppose the rest of the state.
If it wasn't for Philly, we would have solid conservatives representing this state in all statewide and national offices.
The problem with Philadelphia (1.5 million) is the 8 to 1 registration advantage the Democrats hold. Fraud and intimidation work wonders there.
Those counties went strongly for Rendell, unfortunately. I don't know if they've turned against him in the time since. They are receptive to fiscal conservatism, but they are also pro-abort, so it can get tough going there.
I realize this thread was a couple of weeks ago. Anyhow, don't count out Chester (city of Chester), which is roughly 80% minority, but last time I checked, was GOP (black Republican mayor, who has pulled off several minor miracles in bringing in jobs lately). It might have enough of a population to possibly overcome the Philly deficit if Swann can grab it (being in Delaware County, Chester doesn't suffer from many of the political issues that Philly has, and there isn't much love for Philly anywhere in Delco, even in Chester).
