Don't dictate to me, Canada's PM tells US

RICHMOND, British Columbia (Reuters) - Prime Minister Paul Martin escalated a war of words with the United States on Wednesday, telling Washington not to dictate to him what topics he can raise in the run-up to Canada's January 23 election.

U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins warned Martin and other Canadian politicians on Tuesday not to bash the United States as part of their campaigning.

But Martin -- who has regularly attacked the U.S. stance on a bilateral trade dispute over softwood lumber and also criticized Washington's approach to climate change -- said he was not paying attention.

"When it comes to defending Canadian values, when it comes to standing up for Canadian interests, I'm going to call it like I see it," he told reporters in a lumber yard in Richmond, British Columbia.

"I am not going to be dictated to as to the subjects I should raise."

Although Martin came to power in December 2003 promising to repair relations with the United States that were damaged by his predecessor's decision not to take part in the Iraq War, he has shown little hesitation in attacking Washington.

Do we give that country a single dime?

Just a squabble between friends. It will work out.

Can we just buy them in a hostile takeover?

Like Schroeder, he'll probably win by beating up on the supposedly evil US. It's not about telling him what to say, it is about having the courtesy to treat us as the friend we thought we were, rather than as the enemy. It is the same thing as with France.

Depends. We absorb the cost of much of their defense.

I can't remember the population of Canada but I think it's very small considering the size of the country and in comparison to the US - what a bunch of dorks! I had to listen to an America-bashing Canadian jerk while stuck at a dinner a few months back - just a lot of blah, blah, blah about how we were a bunch of gun-owning, psycho-murdering, evil people. It just made me stick to my stomach. A couple of the older people at the table got upset. I wish someone would've stuffed his dinner napkin down his throat.

The whole country is an inferiority complex in a parka. Failing to talk big against the US is political suicide there. I believe their parliament came very close once to renaming the country "Not the United States".

This is merely posturing by PM Martin, wth an eye to win the anti-American vote from the NDP and take the voters minds off his governments many scandals. Sort of like Schroeder did in Germany.

Yeah! He's lucky some gun owner didn't psycho-murder him.

We would need to kick out the frogs and terrorists first or no deal. France should take them.

Many Canadians cannot stop telling you how great their country is, and how miserable Americans and our society is. It is interesting the level that they do this, it is almost as if they are trying to convince themselves. It just reminds me that greatness should be self evident, and not based on other's "failures".

Had a couple like that here in Whitefish about 3 months ago.

Local Cowboys damn near had a necktie party for them.

They found the path of righteousness however and shut their pie holes when one of the Montana boys poured the last of his beer over the head of one of the bigmouthed schmucks.

Yep. It's merely a distraction to his own government's corruption.

Yep, we'll take British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and Nunavut. Let 'em keep the rest, along with every last Islamist from the above mentioned territories.

Except for Alberta, but otherwise, yeah, they're pretty much France with more snow.

Canada is as dependent on American military protection as is Nebraska. I think the police department of any major U.S. city would overwhelm the Canadian defense forces, such as they are. Mexico and Canada are perhaps the two most ungrateful nations on earth.
