It was accompanied by a letter from a commanding officer stating that Fisher was off the ship, on a military mission assigned by his commanders, and could not be given the ballot by Election Day. The ballot got to the Tompkins Board of Elections on time, so if Fisher had said nothing, his vote would likely have been counted....In a nation at war across the globe in a self-styled campaign to promote democracy, having a serviceman lose his franchise because he was on a military mission is simply an unacceptable outcome.

We should not view honesty as being punished.
We should thank God that this young man was so forthcoming.
