Police Dept. video scandal quietly slipping into Phase B
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 12/14/5 | Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross

A funny thing happened over the weekend to the big "Cops Gone Wild" video scandal in San Francisco -- it started getting very quiet.

Apparently, Mayor Gavin Newsom and his handlers realized that while the videos were bad, they didn't quite prove -- at least in the public's mind -- Newsom's charge that they were evidence of a "deep-seated" culture of sexism, racism and homophobia running through the department.

By Sunday, the message was going out that Newsom -- having made his point and formed a "blue-ribbon" commission to look into the department's culture -- was now ready to get as many of the 24 suspended cops back to work in the Bayview Station as possible, as soon as possible.

And indeed, by early this week "back to work" hearings for the suspended cops were under way, with many of the officers headed back to their jobs while the investigation continues.

On Monday, Newsom also met with about a half dozen of the suspended cops at the police union headquarters.

The cops talked about their ties to the Bayview, the work they'd done there and the effect the April 2004 slaying of Officer Isaac Espinoza had on the station. They also said they were sorry about the videos and that all they wanted was to get back to work.

For his part, Newsom said he understood they were good cops, but he was personally disappointed and they showed poor judgment in getting involved with the videos.

The bigwigs are backing off quickly but quietly. The local, conservative, media has been all over this story. They have been calling for Heather Fong's resignation over her stupidity in handling this situation.

Memo: To Friskies next time you need a cop. Call the Mayor's Office.

What's the backstory? I'm not from the Bay area and so am unfamiliar with it.

An attorney for one of the cops was interviewed on Savage the other day. He said the video was made public by none other than Newsom and Wong.

Thanks.

This just reinforces something I've long believed. If you work for the law enforcement or the military, NEVER, EVER make a video. EVER.

They're just furious because the video won't make the kind of money that Brokebutt Mountain will.

Somehow, I just *know* that the original title was "Bareback Mountain."
