Coldest December since late 1800s? Meteorologist's claim comes on heels of climate-warming summit in Canada

© 2005 WorldNetDaily.com A weather expert says December 2005 is on pace to become one of the 10 coldest in more than 100 years, despite claims at a global conference on climate change this week that the Earth is getting warmer.
Joe Bastardi, senior meteorologist with Accuweather.com, says present weather patterns across the country show below-normal temperatures in the single digits, with still colder air forecast in the coming weeks.
All told, he said, "the current look and pace may bring December 2005 in as a top 10 month for cold Decembers nationwide since the late 1800s."
Some examples of the abnormally cold temps include: Omaha, Neb., (17.5 degrees below normal); Indianapolis, Ind., (14.1 degrees below normal); Chicago, Ill., (13.9 degrees below normal); and Denver, Colo., (11.9 degrees below normal).
"The cold is widespread, with below-normal temperatures recorded from eastern Washington and Oregon south into Texas and into the Northeast," said the weather service.
And it could get worse. Accuweather.com "is forecasting another week of unseasonably cold weather, with the potential for another major snowstorm developing on Wednesday."
While the current weather pattern may be considered anecdotal by some, it is timely nonetheless, as it comes on the heels of a United Nations-sponsored event in which most of the more than 150 nations participating claimed the world is getting warmer a phenomenon most blamed on the United States.
Washington was the most frequent target of criticism over the course of the two-week summit in Montreal, Canada, where participants blamed the U.S. for being the world's largest contributor of harmful atmospheric emissions some experts say are increasing, on average, global temperatures.

it was 16 at my house this morning even AFTER the sun came up! The wind chill was 9. If this is global warming, I'd hate to see when it is considered cold!!
Yeah, it is 56 in Orlando - we are about 10 degrees below normal. I'm freezing.
I've been telling people for the past few months that this will be a cold one. But that was just based on all the clinically obese squirrels that have been crossing my yard and having apparent trouble getting back up to their nests. Haven't read the Farmer's Almanac and didn't see the color patterns on the woolly bear caterpillars this year, but our neighborhood squirrels have been looking like candidates for a fat farm.
Actually, that is what you would expect. Predicting individual data points is hard; extrapolating a trend is more reliable.
My nipples are bursting with delight.
Maybe the squirrels are peaking through our windows and watching the global warming news reports and are all stressed out, hording food. The lies on the TV are affecting them also - it is terrible.
Or maybe they see us shopping and hording in case of a nuclear catastrophe and are doing likewise.
Either way - we need a government programs to help the squirrels.
Well, for goodness sakes, be careful, you never know what they may do next. Frightening times these are.
I'm hoping my nipples grow propellors, then I can fly around town doing Action-Live Traffic Reports.
Yeah, I've been there. I retired after 33 years as a meteorologist.
Last night, it was forecast to chill to 2 degrees overnight here in the Upper Connecticut River valley (NH/Vermont border). We woke up this morning to a bone-chilling ELEVEN BELOW ZERO. Weather forecast = worthless. ...and people still believe they can "forecast" global warming? (Oil bills will be astronomical in NE this winter...moving back south in the spring.)
People THINK it's getting warmer.
How old are the records --- 80 - 100 years? Do we have any reliable data on exactly how warm or cold it was on say December 14, 1955, in any remote area of the globe? If so, how reliable was the instrument used? If not, how can we say it is warmer or cooler today?
How reliable are the records? Does the reliability of "global temp" records decrease when we go back 10, 15, 30, 50 years?
You note that every year we seem to have more tornadoes reported. But is that because we are having more tornadoes, or is because we now have the nation literally blanketed with Doppler radar, a technology that did not exist 20 years ago, that can detect every tornado even those in remote areas that cause no damage and had no witnesses?
From what I see when we discuss global climat, we have at best 10-20 years of reliable "global" measurements with which to compare data from any given year. Making claims on long term trends with such slim data is silly.
Fat squirrels in my area too, but that may have something to do with the piles of cracked corn and sunflower seeds that I leave outside for them. Great entertainment for my three cats. :-)
The thing of it is, I wish all the global warming alarmists were right. I don't care to have a repeat of the icy days of my youth here in the upper half of the contiguous fortyeight. Plus I feel that warming the planet will be better than cooling. Especially in Wisconsin.
