It seems that some Iraqis have more loyalty to America and American troops than some of our feckless so called leaders do. Betty D did not limit her comment to Iraqi's but to "Anyone".
How often do we Americans hear gratitude from those that we have attempted to help?

Not all that often from certain quarters.
We did get some thanks for the response to the Tsumami though it was short lived. And the former eastern Block, like Poland, seems not to have forgotton. The Afghani and Iraqi peoples, so far, appear to mirror the Eastern Block in gratitude instead of taking Germany and France's route.
