Alan Philps: Baghdad weblog

American and Iraqi troops have found hundreds of prisoners packed so tightly into a Baghdad detention centre that they had trouble lying down, it was announced yesterday. Some had been tortured.

Of the 625 men, 13 were taken to hospital to be treated for broken bones or the effects of electric shocks. Others had fingernails pulled out or cigarette burns on their necks and backs.

Honor demands avenging dishonor. The Western World has little conception of the depth to which the ancient code of an eye for an eye determines the revengeful activities of these factions. It's amazing that they collectively worship the same Divine Entity. I suggest the closest comparison we have are found in the simplistic motives of the Mafia or the Hatfields and McCoys!

In other words Baghdad, like many other urban centers such as Los Angeles or London, has holding area ovecrowding problems.

Additionally, 2% of the prison population is injured, with most of the injuries being fractures and cigarette burns.

In most of the western world's prisons, 1-2% of the population are treated at the infirmary in any given week, usually from violence by other inmates. Most of those guys are complaining of broken bones, cigarette burns and shank gashes.

This gives us absolutely no evidence of torture.

I think that under the circumstances, some of the evidence of torture can just as easily be assumed to have resulted from actions taken by other prisoners.

IF Iraq can successfully be converted into a western style Democracy it will be quite a feat.

The best we can hope for is a pro-western government with some gratitude towards us, which allow us to use their terriroty for launching attacks against Syria and Iran which will eventually be needed.

I don't think it is possible to change the way the these people think or behave overnight. And their religious beliefs re-enforce their social patterns.

But, but, were any of them made to wear underwear on their heads? Isn't that how we define "torture"? I do hope that some good senator demands an investigation..

Don't tell me that you're appeasing the Shia Islamist terror masters of Baghdad. This whole thing is going to blow up in our faces very, very soon. Putting ayatollahs in charge of I-initialled countries is a bad idea.

This is NOT an antiseptic war. None really ever are and this one certainly is not going to be a model of 'Geneva' perfection.

There is a centuries long tradition of wanton and mindless brutality associated with ANY sort of discord in that part of the world. Warfare in the Middle East is itself a standing green light for the most bestial and inhuman activities. Even family disagreements are settled with a level of violence that is regarded as positively barbaric by Western standards. People committing those kinds of acts in the US are charged, tried and COMMITTED TO MENTAL INSTITUTIONS, but in Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East, that is ordinary hum drum life as usual even in peacetime.

What fries my butt is that the MSM will make a meal out of something that every gradeschool history teacher and every casually informed American understands as common and long standing practice in that country. The MSM will make it out that this behavior is new to the area and NEVER happened till the US and Coalition entered the country, they honestly believe that it will STOP on a dime once we leave!!! ....NOT SO. Muslims are past masters at disgusting and inhuman treatment of one another in peacetime as well as in wartime. Saddam kept the lid on only by being more organized and even more monstrous than the perpetrators.

Current revisionist history does the same thing with the European colonial presence in N. America. Never mind that the indigenous people here and in Central America were still conducting blood sacrifices and slaughtering each other at a pace and to an extent that appalled the settlers and explorers who came here.

You're blind. Give it five years and we'll see who's right. After all, look at Iraq now: we're kowtowing to Ayatollah Sistani and the Dawa and SCIRI parties, along with Sadr, are in charge. Or would you deny any of that?

You're blind.

Of course I am. Only Pat Buchanan, Justin Raimondo, Charley Reese, Paul Craig Roberts, Joe Sobran and David Duke hold to the true palaeoconservative path. Defeatism is the one true religion and I am neocon heretic who is probably secretly Jewish.

Give it five years and we'll see who's right.

Ah, fatalism. The Iraq of 2010 is foreordained. There is nothing to do but sulk and read back issues of Chronicles.

After all, look at Iraq now: we're kowtowing to Ayatollah Sistani and the Dawa and SCIRI parties, along with Sadr, are in charge.

Of course they are in charge. They got 0.23% of the national vote in the last election while the secular and pro-Western United Iraqi Alliance got 48.9% of the vote.

Again, you live in a fantasy world.

Or would you deny any of that?

I deny that the moon is made of green cheese as well.

I also deny that Pat Buchanan "in charge" and I deny that the American mainstream is kowtowing to Lenora Fulani and her New Alliance Marxist forces - unlike the loser "palaeoconservatives" who make common cause with them.

What the hell are you talking about? They got 48% of the vote. Don't tell me that you don't know al-Jafaari is a member of Dawa.
