By the very fact that a person is a murderer they have given themselves the right to decide when another human will die.

Indeed. And a person who does that is wrong to do so. Society has a responsibility to punish those who murder. that punishment, in my opinion, should be a lifetime of imprisonment, so that they might consider the error of their ways.
