A 'Terrifying' Xmas Sight?

A visit from Santa could be a "terrifying" experience for kids, according to advice on a government website.

Competitive party games and trips to a pantomime could also be traumatic for youngsters.

The guidance for teachers on www.teachernet.gov.uk was pulled after parents' groups complained it threatened to destroy the magic of Christmas.

The site warns: "For very young children, Father Christmas can be terrifying, and if you are planning a visit from Santa, you'll need to make sure that fearful children are near an exit."

The advice also said staff organising school Christmas parties should take care not to arrange competitive games with winners and losers, to avoid upsetting the children.

It suggests activities which do not leave children feeling they have "under-performed."

The website had a link to a list of games devised by the "progressive" youth movement, the Woodcraft Folk.

Their advice for Christmas parties is: "If you have prizes, make sure there is also something small for everyone at some stage."

A spokesman for the Department Education said: "This is not government policy and was not produced by the department as the disclaimer on the site makes clear."

The recommendations have now been removed.

Always listen to the "experts" if you want your children to have no fond memories of childhood and to grow up afraid of their own shadows.

This will be the next pro-abortion argument: "Being born can be a traumatic experience for the child..."

A competitive game with winners and losers? You mean like life?

White-house Christmas Tree -- terrifying for liberals.

I always thought that Santa wore red because he was a communist dictator who lived beyond the reach of civilized law; ruthlessly exploiting the labor of imprisoned elves, and routinely scaring the local fauna into flight. Now if those underfed elves were represented by a union, this whole Christmas thing, would be told from an entirely different perspective.

Hunh... I played Santa last night at our church family supper, and none of the kids seemed terrified of me! Quite the opposite, their eyes lit up and they smiled the biggest happiest smiles. And when I would pick them up and hold them for photos... the joyful laughs were truly priceless.

Afraid of Santa? Not likely! Clowns and ACLU lawyers, on the other hand...

Actually, if it's a Christmas or even a "holiday" party, I'm not real certain what the purpose of a "competitive" game would be. The advice gets too touchy-feeley, but I would agree in this case with making sure every child gets at least something. What's wrong with that at a Christmas party?

As for SC, I know both of my kids at young ages were frightened of getting too near him. Notice the article doesn't say not to have Santa visit, it just advises people to be aware some kids might be scared. If you've never seen a kid screaming or crying on Santa's lap, you haven't been paying attention.

You say "clowns and lawyers" as if they are separate!

That reminds of Ronald Reagan, standing at the headstone of a dead politician that read - "Here lies an honest man and a statesman." To which he remarked to nancy - "Look, dear - two men in one grave!"

A lot of kids will cry at anything with which they are not familiar, I bet these kids would have cried even if they were put on Mother Theresa's lap.

I'd agree, and right at the top of the terrifying list for very young children are costumed creatures and people, including Santa (and those nefariuous clowns)

I conselation prize for kids games as all fine and good, but sometime kids are gonna have tolearn there are winners and losers in life, and that is usually decided by their actions
