Geysers erupt across county (Kingfisher, OK)

KINGFISHER -- State and local officials are puzzled by a series of geysers that have erupted in recent days in Kingfisher County, spewing mud and gas into the air.

The geysers have appeared throughout the countryside, with stretches of up to 12 miles between spots, and some as short as a quarter of a mile, Kingfisher Fire Chief John Crawford said.

The threat of the gas igniting is "unlikely," Crawford said, but a bigger concern is the gas could begin coming up through water-well lines.

I'm guessing they may be natural gas emissions.

So help me understand a bit (cause your guess beats the reporting) - Would there be a big pocket of natural gas, a bit of shifting in the earth and the gas just following the shift?

Natural gas is found in sand below the surface. There would have to be a shift that creats a deep crack.

An acquaintance just up the road used to tell the story as children for fun they would turn on the garden hose and "light it" There was enough natural gas in the mix to have both fire and water.

Some kids just grow up luckier than others (can you imagine the water fights, or better yet for the 4th of July just lighting the soaker hose)

Muddy water from Dead Indian Creek spews several feet in the air from a gaping hole where gas broke through the surface on a rural road outside Kingfisher.

Kingfisher County officials trying to find source of odd eruptions By Cass Rains Staff Writer

A portion of county road about 7 miles southwest of Kingfisher has succumbed to a geyser of sorts.

A hole that has engulfed half of a county road is spitting a mixture of mud and water while venting gas into the air above a 5-foot crater the geyser created.

Approaching the crater, a sound like waves crashing upon a rock shore intensifies, thumping to a hectic rhythm and slapping mud and water onto the road above. In the sunlight, vapors of gas spewing from the ground shimmers and the dry dirt road is soaked 10 feet out from the crater.

Look towards salt domes being used to store CNG. There is a previous FR thread of such a case and may have been in OK.

This isn't like geo thermal geyser.

More like bad gas with loose stools.

Apparently the oil and Gas industry is a big player in the local economy. There may be a well out there somewhere with a casing leak or a bad pipeline and the gas is following the creek sediments and blowing out when and where it can.

Someone there should check out the infrastructure, following these 'geysers' to either end of the line. My bet is there is a gas pipeline crossing the creek somewhere with a problem.
