POLICE have made their first arrest over the bashing of three North Cronulla surf lifesavers as details emerged that the violence was not completely unprovoked. Detectives arrested an 18-year-old Bankstown concreter at his Petersham workplace shortly before 10am.
Police took a statement from him about the assault on Sunday at North Cronulla beach before he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company and affray and granted conditional bail.
Shortly before 2pm the man emerged in the back of a police car. Detectives drove him to nearby Railway Ave, where he left the police car and jumped into a white sedan. The youth, when approached by The Daily Telegraph, refused to talk about the incident.
Police will allege he did not start the assault but did throw a number of punches during the melee. He is scheduled to appear before Sutherland Local Court on January 19.
Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph has learned police are not treating Sunday's bashing as completely unprovoked.
Police will allege that as the three lifesavers were walking from the beach to the boardwalk about 3pm four Middle Eastern youths began yelling at them in Arabic. The lifesavers said to the the youths: "What are you looking at?"
The Middle Eastern youths allegedly told the lifesavers to get off the beach and that they "owned" the beach.
The lifesavers allegedly responded by telling the youths that if they went in the surf, they would need rescuing because they could not swim.
Strong coarse language was allegedly used by both groups. The taunt about swimming turned the aggression physical, with the four youths bashing the lifesavers and another eight to 10 Middle Eastern males joining them, police will allege.
One surf lifesaver, aged 19, sustained a cut near his eye and the other two, aged 15 and 20, suffered facial bruising.
A lifeguards on patrol at the time of the attack told The Daily Telegraph yesterday a colleague had just finished patrol and was leaving the beach when he was allegedly confronted and abused by one of the men.
"There was some pushing and shoving and then another bloke ran up from behind and king hit him and then he was on the ground. That's when I ran up to help," he said. "They punched me and kept fighting."

"What are you looking at?"
Even dogs do not crap in the place they sleep.
I guess they figured they can't have Israel so they'll go for Australia?
"What are you looking at?"
Bunch of sand flea ridden camel rapists what of it?
Fair enough. Policemen sitting on their rears while people are being threatened and turf wars are going on should be summarily fired, along with their superiors.
Once a Muslim drops a steaming pile of worm writing, it becomes hallowed ground.
Well that isn't quite fair of you to say. I understand that camels give it up willingly.
But camels spit not swallow...

MAROUBRA Beach could be the new setting for race riots this weekend after police discovered a text message urging Middle Eastern gangs to start trouble in the Eastern Suburbs instead of Cronulla.
The message urged troublemakers to go to Maroubra beach on Sunday because the heavy police presence at Cronulla would prevent a confrontation.
The development came a day after The Daily Telegraph published comments from the Bra Boys surf gang leader, Koby Abberton warning Middle Eastern gangs to "stay away" from Maroubra.
Cronulla parents yesterday vowed to press ahead with a nippers carnival despite fears that brawls could erupt at the beach.
Cronulla residents yesterday turned on Premier Morris Iemma, accusing him of applying a "Bandaid" to racial problems in the area.
The Premier strolled along the beachfront at Cronulla yesterday calling for calm between local youths and Middle Eastern gangs.
The photo opportunity turned into a nightmare when locals rounded on him.
Resident Terry Hall demanded to know when Cronulla police would be "taken seriously" and given resources to deal with thugs.
John, a local who would only give his first name, shouted Mr Iemma down as he spoke, declaring: "That's a joke. That's pathetic."
"The speech was pathetic. It was political. We respect the police. The gangs do not."
An embarrassed Mr Iemma said police had the resources to deal with the turf war between locals and Middle Eastern gangs.
His advice to those thinking of sparking trouble was to stay away.
Declaring it was "business as usual" on the beach this weekend, Mr Iemma warned: "Police will crack down on any criminal behaviour and offenders will be arrested and and charged."
Geoff, an older resident, said the elderly would join younger locals on Sunday to show solidarity.
"Elderly people feel threatened but want to show support," he said.
Voters (elders) join the militant arm. The politicos need heed this coalition.
it's funny how MSM used the "race" card.

"The people here are just loyal, and when you have three lifeguards getting bashed then you have to make a stance. But the media has created this . . . It's mainly their fault."
CASSIE
Typical thug conduct. Fourteen Muslims attacking three non-Muslims.
Might be a good time to bring in 70 Americans to give those punks an object lesson on what it's like being outnumbered almost 5 to 1 in a fight.
The life guards provoked the Muzzies by answering back. Definitely their fault.
Send them to a retraining camp, and make sure they get sensitivity training.
Also, give the Muzzies a deed to the beach, since they claimed it in the name of Islam; and ban non-mooselimbs from setting foot on it, and then these incidents will cease and peace prevail.
<< I guess they figured they can't have Israel so they'll go for Australia? >>
Nope.
Not particularly.
They want Missouri, too.
Funny, I always thought punches and kicks turned things physical. I guess the old saying about sticks and stones is just another myth of my youth.
So that settles it. Tell someone they can not swim and they are justified in beating you up.
