Al-Zawahri credits toppled Taliban leader Mullah Omar with leading a three-year campaign "against the Crusaders and apostates in Afghanistan" and purportedly taking control of "extensive parts of eastern and western Afghanistan."

That suggests to me that Al-Zawahri is not in Afghanistan. He obviously doesn't have much info on what's happening there.

Interpret that......Omar is now hiding in an afghan cave somewhere being hunted down by forces of the new government.
