Chris Wallace: Mike Wallace Has 'Lost It'

"Fox News Sunday" anchorman Chris Wallace says father Mike Wallace has "lost it" - after the legendary CBS newsman told the Boston Globe last week that the fact George Bush had been elected president shows America is "[expletive]-up."

"He's lost it. The man has lost it. What can I say," the younger Wallace lamented to WRKO Boston radio host Howie Carr on Friday.

"He's 87-years old and things have set in," the Fox anchor continued. "I mean, we're going to have a competence hearing pretty soon."

Wallace Jr. quickly dispelled any notion that he was joking. When Carr suggested that his comments were likely to be covered by NewsMax, he responded: "You know what? Fine. Go ahead. Call them. That's fine. I'll stand by that."

Returning to the topic of his father's competence, Wallace Jr. explained: "He's checked out. I don't understand it," beyond the fact that Wallace Sr. has "problems with the war."

"I don't know why he said what he said," he added.

On Thursday, the elder Wallace told the Boston Globe that if he had the chance to interview President Bush, he'd ask:

"What in the world prepared you to be the commander in chief of the largest superpower in the world? In your background, Mr. President, you apparently were incurious. You didn't want to travel. You knew very little about the military. . . . The governor of Texas doesn't have the kind of power that some governors have. . . . Why do you think they nominated you? . . . Do you think that has anything to do with the fact that the country is so [expletive] up?"

When I read this a few days ago I wasn't sure if he was joking or perhaps embarrased by his Dad's behavior lately. Mike was on with Imus several weeks ago and it was pitiful to listen to him grasp for words to put two sentences together. I thought he was on drugs. He called the I-man several days later to apologize.

This is a really sad thing, to see someone with such a long, distinguished career hang on so long that he starts to embarass himself. It must be brutal for Chris to witness it.

That said, the one image I will always have of Mike Wallace is of him interviewing Vladimir Putin; when Putin mildly mentioned his faith in God, Wallace waggled his hands about in the air and rolled his eyes upwards (in what I guess was supposed to represent how religious people behave) and said something like, "So GOD (waggle) makes your decisions for you?" It was just a complete ridiculing of the man's faith right to his face.

So long, old dinosaur media. Can't say we'll miss you.

I wonder what Wallace the Younger thinks of Dad's upcoming interview with Ahmadinejad?

At first I thought this was recent. Chris has been boycotting Howie ever since he used Chris saying "He's a very attractive man." about Mitt as a bumper.

Same here, but the headline seems about as current as you can get...

It must be difficult for Chris W. to do a decent journalistic job when dear ol' dad is clearly insane and won't S T F U. He had to make SOME statment in response to Mike's statements about Bush and about Iran, and he made the right one. Maybe it's not "nice" to diss a parent, but it's not "nice" for a parent to be a traitor, eithe.

This is a thread from December 2005, I just thought it pertinent considering the upcoming 60 Minutes soft-piece on Ahmadinejad this Sunday...

I love how Mike used the term "Zionist state".

Talk about sleeping with the enemy.

I heard Mike Wallace on the Hannity show yesterday covering his meeting with the Iranian president.

The poor old man is obviously starting to dodder. I'd expect that he's afflicted with oncoming Alzheimer's disease.

I've also heard people say that those who know they're close to the grave have a tendency to speak magnanimously about even the worst sort of people. It's as if they're performing some sort of penance by trying to be a peacemaker, knowing that soon they'll have left this world and won't have to deal with any repercussions or answer for any of their failed do-gooder actions. Meanwhile, the rest of us have to sit and politely nod our heads, because after all, these words were said by an elderly man with one foot in the grave and we're bound to set aside rationale and respect what they say.

I say 'phooey' to that.

I heard the last few moments of Mike Wallace talking with Hannity yesterday. The old man couldn't pronounce Ahmadinejad, Sean had to do it for him.

The topper was when old man Wallace said Ahmadinejad was a rational human being.

No competency hearing required, Chris. Mike is certifiable.
