I saw on the news some marshal was saying he sizes up the passangers on who might be able to help him. Military haircuts, NYPD tee-shirt, etc.

He said most of the stuff is undercover. Asking the attendent to check on the guy that's been in the bathroom a little too long, then goes to "use" the restroom and does a search of the thing. So yes, perhaps their was a marshall on board.

There are very few cultures where this would happen: The USA, Scotland, Ireland and possibly Britain, Australia and ( a big maybe) Canada. The rest of the world's nationals would just sit and wait for "someone else" to get the job done. Individual initiative does not happen worldwide in such situations. I would still like an Air Marshall or two hanging around, but that is not possible on all flights. Now that a high jacking means almost certain death, most normal peoples survival instincts will kick in when threatened at 30,000 feet!
