Far as I can see- they're a private company. They should be able to hire and fire as they wish. If they don't want smokers, that's their business.

You're correct, they are a private company that is making a political statement........
As a private individual, you can choose what private companies you do business with.....
Besides, there is a strong argument that this company is attempting to control their employees lives beyond the scope of their employment. These employees compensation, or advancement is not being judged on how they perform, but what legal activities they do on their off time.
This runs in the face of the concept of freedom and rugged individualism that made this country great.

Absolutely. But I demand that 75% of all their profits be donated to Republican causes or I won't buy their products. Makes about as much sense, doesn't it?

It is true that Scotts can act as fascists idiots if they want to. It is also true that I can start a witch hunt against their skanky asses for producing products that pollute the environment and call on State and Federal officials to tax the you know what out of them until they are in the grave.
Public relations...it matters. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Scotts is asking for trouble and first chance I see come along to get them back, I will. That is my right as a taxpayer/citizen. Everyone has rights to screw the other guy.

Correct, and I will spend my money elsewhere.

If they don't want smokers, that's their business. Really? Where do YOU draw the line? What if they decided that Prodigal Son was just a little fat for the job, would that be good enough to fire you?
