Dec 10, 2005 NEW YORK An off-duty police officer was shot and killed Saturday in a pre-dawn gunfight with two burglars outside his home, authorities said. He was the second officer to die in the line of duty in two weeks.
First, this story is a lie, because guns are banned in NYC. Second, is it just me or is "in the line of duty" losing its meaning?

Although he was off-duty, once he is involved in stopping a crime in progress he is on-duty.

In jurisdictions I am familiar with, cops are never really off duty only off shift. When off shift - or off duty - and responding to a crime they are on duty.
