Hundreds of riot police armed with guns and shields surrounded and sealed off a southern Chinese village where authorities shot dead as many as 10 demonstrators this week.
Residents in Dongzhou, a village in Guangdong province, said thousands of people had gathered to protest over what they said was inadequate compensation being offered for land to be used in the construction of a wind power plant.
Police fired into the crowd and killed a handful of people, mostly men, villagers reached by telephone said. Accounts of the death toll ranged from two and 10, with many missing.
State media have made no mention of the incident and both provincial and local governments have repeatedly refused to comment.
All the villagers said they were nervous and scared and most did not want to be identified for fear of retribution. One man said the situation was still "tumultuous."
A 14-year-old girl said a local official visited the village on Friday and called the shootings "a misunderstanding."
"He said (he) hoped it wouldn't become a big issue," the girl said over the telephone. "This is not a misunderstanding. I am afraid. I haven't been to school in days."
She added, "Come save us."
Another villager said there were at least 10 deaths.
"The riot police are gathered outside our village. We've been surrounded," she said, sobbing. "Most of the police are armed. We dare not to go out of our homes."
Well, since they are now dead, they won't need that compensation at all.
One of these days the whole billion+ of them are going to say "enough" and the Government will have to be changed. They will wake up collectively one day and rise up. It's gotta happen. A half-billion people can be formidable, even unarmed, if collectively riled. The government knows that and tries to keep them misinformed. Their plates won't spin forever.
Have all your "summits" "G8" "trade meetings" "financial enclaves" and all other world get togethers in China.
You won't have to worry about a bunch of dirty, flea-infested, dope smoking "protesters" disturbing your meetings.
Ain't communism grand?
Tyranny marches on.
China is losing control of information. The more it's citizens are allowed to travel abroad for work purposes the more they see that what they are taught isn't what is real. The urban areas are getting more and more connected to the internet. Once that happens there will be a growing underground movement that will be hard to control. I would not want to be there when it blows.
Eminent Domain marches on. After the Kelo decision, the US could face the same problem. Except it will be SWAT teams surrounding neighborhoods after the residents shot the local cops for attempting to evict them for the private developers.
Isn't it nice that SCOTUS is transcending the parochial bounds of our own constitution and looking toward other international models of justice? Re: Kelo, maybe they looked at China.
Where is ANSWER? Where is ACLU? Where is Amnesty International? Where is the Dems? Where is the New York Times? Where is the LA Times? Where is the CBS? Where is Bill Clinton? Where are the Euroliberals?
