INDIANAPOLIS Undocumented immigrants in Indiana would receive a special drivers license if they pass an exam and buy auto insurance under a new proposal.
State Rep. John Aguilera, D-East Chicago, said the licenses would not help people gain U.S. citizenship but would be more like a permit to grant driving rights to illegal immigrants.
It should be framed as a public safety issue. Thats what were trying to impact here, said Aguilera, the only Hispanic member of the General Assembly and chairman of the Indiana Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs.
The commission plans to present the General Assembly with a detailed report on the issue next month.
A state permit would ensure that immigrant drivers have insurance and know the rules of the road, he said. It could make them less likely to leave accident scenes, he said.
Gov. Mitch Daniels said the issue of untrained, uninsured immigrant drivers needs to be addressed but stopped short of supporting permits.
This is a problem every state is wrestling with. It needs, I think, to be addressed on multiple fronts, Daniels said. I think it can only go hand in hand with improvements in making sure the law is not being violated, and that people offered that permission are here legally.

Two words. MOTOR VOTER.
One word.
There is no way to stop it. Government workers don't know any better. Some supervisor will tell them that they are required by law to offer voter registration to EVERY driver's license applicant. DemocRATS ALWAYS do things incrementally. They passed the Motor Voter Fraud Bill knowing that someday illegal aliens would be allowed to apply for a driver's license.
Unfortunately, permitting them to drive legally would make them less likely to leave the country too.
I agree:
NO.
I will ponder if there is somthing that can be done.
That is, short of carving it in the sidewalk at the front door of every DMV office!
You're right about RATS' methodology, but you (and so many others on this forum) seem oblivious to the fact that the Motor-Voter law could not have passed without Republican participation. Bob Dull (Senate Republican leader at the time) could have filibustered this stupid, evil legisilation. Why didn't he?
We also need to keep in mind the fact that Republicans have controlled congress for some years now. Has anyone even INTRODUCED legislation to REPEAL the evil Motor-Voter law - a law whose sole purpose was to facilitate vote fraud? The answer, of course, is NO.
I can't disagree with you. The Motor Voter Fraud Bill needs to be repealed. Now.
Would these permanent illegal visitors be required to be able to read highway signs printed in English before being granted driving licenses?
Give them 30 days to get the license. On the 31st day they MUST appear in person to receive the license. When they show up all happy to get their licenses DEPORT EVERY SINGLE LAST ONE OF THEM.
How about concealed weapons permits for escaped felons?
Just part of the "new America".
They buy auto insurance on Tuesday.
They get their drivers license paperwork done on Wednesday.
When they have all that done on Wednesday, they move on to Thursday, etc.
By Friday, they have cancelled their insurance with the story that they didn't pass their license exam.
Happens over and over again. We pay OVER & OVER AGAIN.
Why should these criminals receive a special license when they should not even be in the country? If one comes across illegal aliens, the only response that makes sense is to deport them.
Are they all crazy???
As best I see, there are at least two objectives of interest in this discussion. One can be described as the very legitimate need to minimize illegal immigration to the US. The other can be seen as an equally legitimate and important need to minimize the number of deaths caused on roadways in the United States. It is clear that the objectives of one do not perfectly coincide with the objectives of the other, and this is what makes a solution so delicate.
We should be careful, however, before associating illegal immigration with increased death tolls on US roadways. Illegal immigration does not cause death on roadways. It is the fact that they are not given licenses and road training that makes the death higher than what it should be. This fact, as well as the fact that they do not have any insurance credentials, makes them highly dangerous motorists and makes accidents very costly and frustrating to the rest of us. It is clear in this view that licensing for all motorists would be the optimal solution to this specific problem - the problem of roadway deaths. But some believe that this action would have a negative impact on the fight against illegal immigration. (It may, or it may not. These costs must be taken against the benefits.)
Forgive me, but I don't understand what all the fuss is about. The debate here has become so political and ideological that it has lost connection with the fundamental forces at play in this problem. Isn't it clear that saving the lives of motorists is vastly more important than preventing a bunch of poor foreigners from making a decent living?
If they came here legally, would this be any better for you guys? They'd still be TAKING YOUR JOBS, and they'd still be PAYING FEWER TAXES, BECAUSE THEY'RE STILL BUNCH OF POOR F#CKS. It seems as though the illegal thing (I'll capitalize it if you like - the ILLEGAL THING) is just a pathetic ploy.
Remember that illegal immigrants will drive, regardless of whether they are educated and licensed or not. IF they are really willing to take incredibly huge risks in order to secure a Texas minimum wage, then perhaps (just perhaps) they're also willing to drive a vehicle without proper licensing. AND HELL, if you were willing to take the risk to jump the border to Mexico illegally, perhaps you wouldn't afraid to drive illegally in Mexico, either... Unlicensed drivers cause huge problems, regardless of whether or not they are illegal!!!! If licensing standards in this country make "holding a drivers license" such a big political deal, perhaps it is time to *dethrone* the drivers' from all its non-vehicular obligations - either that or create a card that non-citizens and non-permanent residents can hold that enables them to drive according to a TESTED driving ability. This new license would be open to international students (not a bad idea), foreign visitors & long-term tourists, as well as illegal immigrants, and would only serve the purpose of licensing a person's vehicle operating capabilities.
BUT F#CK, as it is, permanent residents cannot vote, but they can drive. IS THIS SUCH A F#CKING PROBLEM? Please tell me you KNEW THAT!!!!
If this sort of approach were taken seriously, it would make US roadways safer. Also, since illegal immigrants do not get licenses or any sort of paperwork anyway, this initiative would not change the ability of law enforcement officials to deal with the present situation.
(THINK TWICE before replying to this. NO BULLSH!T, PLEASE!!)
