You can hate the current actions and personnel of a government and still be patriotic, but if you despise the nation's founding principles (such as free and open expression of religion, or the right of the citizenry to keep and bear arms, for example) and root for your nation's defeat by foreign adversaries, you cannot logically call yourself patriotic.

I totally agree. I love my country and the ideals it was founded on. Therefore, I hate it when people in control of the country go against these founding principles and claim the "patrioter than thou" attitude. Just because you have an American flag pinned to your tailored suit doesn't make you a patriot.Just because you vote Republican or Democrat doesn't make you a patriot. True patriots are those who go against popular opinion because they feel that it doesn't align with those founding priciples, or that it has been hijacked by special interests.
