A plane has apparently crashed through a fence at Midway airport in Chicago. Southwest airline 737 plane now sitting in intersection of 55th and Central. Channel 7 has confirmed, fire and ambulances on way. Details still sketchy.
Surprisingly, despite not having all their attention on this story like CNN, Fox has actually broken more details about what has occurred.
Imagine the ticket. No plates, no tail lights, high beams only, no bumpers, probably way above the height limit, no mufflers and running open exhaust - and I'll bet he ran the intersection on a red light.
I think the 737 might be the largest plane they currently allow to fly at Midway. I remember as a kid going by Midway when there was only General Aviation and maybe a couple of commercial prop flights daily. The big treat was they parked the Goodyear blimp there when it was doing a Chicago event, and it would be sitting in the same corner at 55th and Central. The neon sign would still be running. Made a 10 year olds day.
OK...I thought so.
"I think you mean "ooops.""
How about "oops"?
An ice storm in SD?
That doesn't make much sense since it was snowing here.
"...Hire more ex-Navy pilots...."
If he is still with Southwest, Robert L. "Hoot" Gibson is a former Navy jet jockey and a former astronaut.
CNN video - firemen seems to be using the jaws of life on a vehicle pinned against some kind of high metal fence.
Do they still fly general aviation in and out of Midway, or did Hizzoner Daley decide to turn THAT into a park as well? (Sorry. Flight Simulator geek still bitter about Meigs Field.)

Southwest is the most heavily unionized airline in America.
Their costs are getting bigger, the employees want more.
The bigs are lowering their costs to compete, that is why you see Southwest making a push at Philadelphia and Denver.
Damn. I hate quick yellows too.
eyewitness on CNN - car under the plane.
True about Qantas, but Southwest has flown almost 10x the number of flights that Qantas has in its history so it is not exactly apples and apples. Aer Lingus, Finnair, and a couple others have perfect flight records with a few more flights than Qantas, but Southwest has completed several times the number of flights of the best of them.
One could chalk it up to luck, but I am not a big believer in luck.
I certainly HOPE you're not planning any jokes about "sliders."
;O)
Probably above the speed limit too.:')
It is - 63rd and Cicero - northeast side, though. Southeast side is some discount store; southwest is Giordano's and northwest is, of course, the airport. 63rd and Central is mostly residential; there used to be a big flophouse ther just south of the airport but they tore it down and made a snall park. I think Mr. Charlie's Pub is still there but I haven't been in it in, literally, 25 years.
I've seen ATA 757s flying into and out of Midway. Not a biggun, but big enough.
CNN saying 55th and Central.....
That's sad - I remember Mr. Charlie's -- showing my age...
