Doughnut franchises in Saugus, Medford close

Krispy Kreme doughnut shops closed yesterday in Saugus and Medford. Officials at the Jan Cos., a Cranston, R.I., company that is the Krispy Kreme franchiser for New England, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

...

The Medford location was the franchiser's first Massachusetts store.

Krispy Kreme opened with big hype in the Boston area and then failed to make it in the stretch. The over-sweetened rebs slink back south with their tails between their legs.

Yankees don't deserve Krispy Kreme! Can't expect Yankees to appreciate true Southern cuisine!

Gee, my original (and slightly inflammatory) title didn't last long.

By the way it was the "War of Northern Agression."

Yes, KK was foolish to think they could take on the Borg.

I think there are seven in Somerville alone.

The doughnuts were too small and too expensive. Krispy Kreme realized this too late and began offering specials. But it was too late. This is happening all over to a greater or lesser extent.

The Krispy Kreme in Newington CT closed also after a lot of hoopla when it opened. The one in Orange CT remains. I still think their donuts are better than Dunkin Donuts though.

I am happy to see that Dunkin Donuts is winning the donut war in New England. I figured they would. Dunkin Donuts is a New England institution. Commuters in Boston couldn't make it through the day without them. Krispy Kreme's are good, particularly when served warm. But once you get past the warm glazed donuts, the rest of their donuts are pretty unremarkable. Long live the King!

Before Dr Atkins died (and his craze shortly after) he took Krispy Kreme with him. They never recovered.

Krispy Kreme was a big ponzi scheme.

Krispy Kreme are merely glazed donuts. A BIG yawn.

They don't hold a candle to the old Helm's glazed.

There's some truth to that. In reality, most people I know have tried to cut back on donuts, etc. Everybody seems to have a cholesterol problem or diabetes.

Agree with all the posts _ I have no use for KKremes. Dunkin Donuts, on the other hand, has the original "plain" dunkin'donut, sort of "creuller" like with a little handle on the donut for dunking, and it is a classic.

Also -- decent (not great) coffee, breakfast sandwiches are OK too, good muffins, and a open late/all-night ambiance.

KKremes cuould not compete with that, and featuring "glazed" donuts as their mainstay product? Not a chance.

When not served FRESH HOT out of the oven, Kremes are nothing special.

Steamin' hot, though, they melt in one's mouth. Man, oh man!

Such as me. By mostly eliminating stuff like donuts and fries, and cutting down other things, and exercising more, I got my blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol all back in the normal range.
