He can look at the sun for hours
Hindustan Times ^ | December 8, 2005

A man in Orissa claims he can look at the sun for more than five hours at a stretch without experiencing any pain.

Sun worshipper Jayaram Pradhan, 38, who runs a shop in Balasore town, 209 km from here, says he has been staring at the sun like that for several years now even though health experts warn it can cause blindness.

"I can look at the sun for hours on end," says Pradhan, a resident of Chakajagannathpur village, located about 20 km from Balasore.

Pradhan says, "The sun is the source of all energy and I decided to draw power by looking at it for hours. That is how I started this practice.

"Initially, I looked at the sun for a few minutes at noon when it is the brightest. Then I started increasing the viewing time. I have been worshipping the sun since my childhood although I started this practice eight years ago.

"Looking at the sun is a sort of meditation for me."

Pradhan has demonstrated his extraordinary skill several times in his village and at Balasore town in front of hundreds of curious onlookers.

He publicly demonstrated his skill at Balasore town Monday and looked at the sun from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., an eyewitness said. The incident attracted a big crowd and police had a tough time controlling it that day, he said.

"I neither have any physical complaint nor any irritation in my eyes. My eyesight is normal and I am ready to go for any medical examination to prove that," says Pradhan.

Everybody needs some exposure to the sun because it's the primary source of vitamin D, which helps us absorb calcium for stronger, healthier bones.

P.C. Rath, an eye surgeon, says, "Unprotected exposure to its ultraviolet rays can cause skin or eye damage, immune system suppression and even cancer. I believe he must have damaged his eyes, which can be confirmed only on examination."

And there are scads more where those came from!

I'm peeved, though, that the original picture is missing from Unshaven Women Protest Bush. Now that was a classic Caption This.

You know how it goes . . . the thread starts out funny and gets funnier, and soon you feel you are in the presence of comic genius!

That's when the bookmarking happens.

From The Eye of Apollo by G.K. Chesterton.

"As I understand it, it is a theory of theirs", answered Flambeau, 'that a man can endure anything if his mind is quite steady. Their two great symbols are the sun and the open eye; for they say if a man were really healthy he could stare at the sun.'

'If a man were really healthy,' said Father Brown, 'he would not bother to stare at it.'
