I actually like this trade. They got rid of a guy who didn't fit in Boston and replaced him with a prospect that has a lot of upside down the road. They have a kid named Pedroia who could play short or second that looks a lot like David Eckstein. 2nd basemen are almost a dime a dozen (SS with no arms). what they lack is a good first baseman. The guy they got from the Padres will fill in nicely at second.
