San Francisco -- A 32-year-old woman was convicted for posting a death threat on an Internet message board connected to the Terry Schiavo case, authorities said Wednesday.

Dera Marie Jones, of San Francisco, was convicted by a federal jury Tuesday afternoon of sending a death threat across state lines, according to U.S. Attorney Kevin V. Ryan.

The jury found that Jones intended to threaten Schiavo's husband and a Florida judge when she posted the threat on an America Online message board dedicated to the brain-damaged woman at the center of a bitter right-to-die debate.

"If she dies, I will kill Michael Schiavo and the judge," Jones wrote. "This is real!"

So Terri died, and Jones will go to jail. How's that for justice?

It's just stupid to make threats like that over the internet, particularly when they can find out who you are. You have to be a member to be on AOL and they keep records in case the police are pursuing criminal charges.

As much as I was supportive of Terri, making threads was stupid and now she is paying the price for her stupidity.

Correct me if I'm wrong. If someone threatens to kill me and I notify the cops, they're going to arrest that person and they'll be facing 5 years in jail. I'm a little skeptical.

Well, threatening a judge has been punishable since the dawn of history. So it is straight in the legal mainstream.

Jones is about to get a lesson in reality.

What a question. What does A have to do with B in this statement? Perhaps you could use 48 hours behind bars to sober up.

I noticed the post at DU threatening the life of the President and the Administration was removed several hours after it was made. Curious as to whether the FBI had seen it. I'm sure there's several FR members that have a copy of it like myself.

An excellent point. There is some very selective prosecution going on here.

Why don't you forward it to the FBI? It is not the first time their have been threats made over there.

Very selective, except that no death threat was made by her. Lock her up anyway, right?

Darn, JFK was shot in Dallas and you thank me for sharing. Where's the justice in that?

---Very selective, except that no death threat was made by her. ---

Not a death threat perhaps, but she threatened the President with bodily harm.

The person in this article was evidently not convicted of threatening a judge, but with making an interstate death threat. Next time someone threatening death to someone on an internet message board go run it by the FBI and see how far you get. Is this sort of prosecution common? I've never heard of it.

Last time I was threatened with death by someone, they and their thug-head friends actually tried to carry it out. Thanks to a double barreled shotgun in my possession they came up considerably short, but the police response was that I should move!

You can't threaten a judge with anything other than Impeachment. That is long standing as a legal precedent, and for good reason.

Well, in some cases where you can vote for them, you can threaten to vote them out, I suppose.

"Why don't you forward it to the FBI? It is not the first time their have been threats made over there."

Some of us, myself included, did report it the night it was posted (Sun Nov-20-05 09:59 PM) but as of the present hour I have not heard anything so have no idea if it was ignored or if it's in the process of being investigated.

The poster was very explicit in what his intentions were, and was brazen enough to post his 'earthlink' e-mail addy in the post also.

I have forwarded several net threats to the FBI since 9/11. I have no idea if anything came of it.

I missed that one - busy week. Was it at DU? If so, I can guess what the content was.
