This sure doesn't sound like "being off his meds" for bipolar disorder. Bipolar is emotional highs and lows. If he was having delusions or hallucinations and became combative...he had schizophrenia.
Regardless....his wife KNEW? I think she's a few sammiches short of a picnic herself...letting him fly instead of making sure he received medical attention.
