COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Former Gov. Carroll Campbell Jr., popular and politically savvy, who helped make the Republican Party a powerful force in South Carolina politics and changed the face of state government while recruiting big-name industries, died Wednesday. He was 65.
Campbell was admitted to a residential facility to treat Alzheimer's disease this past summer, nearly four years after he announced he had been diagnosed with the illness.
Family members could not immediately be reached, but the former governor's chief of staff said a statement would be forthcoming. Lexington Medical spokeswoman Margaret Gregory said Campbell was brought to the hospital early Wednesday and died there.
Campbell was a four-term congressman before he took office in 1986 as South Carolina's second Republican governor since Reconstruction. He easily won re-election in 1990 and might have won again four years later had state law not barred him from a third consecutive term.
I lived in S.C. long enough to vote for this man in his first term. And I am proud to have done so. Until he became ill, he was tops on my list of Presidential candidates I would have supported.
65 is considered so young nowadays. How sad. I have a nice picture of myself with Gov Campbell from CPAC in 1994. Seemed like a very nice man. The GOP could have done well with someone like him as president, I think. Condolences to his family.
Ping.
I wonder what Campbell though of McCain during the 2000 primaries.
I hope he was also not too happy with what Lindsay Graham has brought to the party.
What sad news. I knew Mr. Campbell well when he was in Congress. R.I.P.
May he rest in peace. Prayers for his family.
Governor Campbell was a great man, and without him the GOP may still be an also-ran in the South. Had he not been afflicted with that terrible disease, he may have become President.
Prayers for his family. May he rest in peace.
Carroll Campbell was the speaker at Columbia College commencement when I graduated in 1988. His passing is the loss of a great politician, and a great human being who did and incredible good for the state of S.C. Prayers to his family.
A tragedy for the people of South Carolina. Perhaps a blessing he did not linger in that condition for a long time. One of the most horrible ways one can die. Indeed, may he rest in peace.
He did so much for South Carolina. What a tragedy that he left us so young. But what a blessing his legacy to the state is.
Prayers for his family and him.
He will be missed.
I know his son Mike; he is a good man too.
Me and the Governor in my USC college days at a Republican event in the 'low country.'
"God bless you...put in a good word for us down here."

He seemed liked a Gentleman...a gentle-man. Very young....very sad.
