Justice minister: No CIA jail in Thailand

Justice Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chidchai Vanasathidya has strongly denied US reports the American Central Intelligence Agency operates a secret prison in Thailand, or uses the country as a prisoner transfer point.

"I want to reassure all of you that we do not have a secret jail and there was never any terrorist suspect passing through Thailand," Pol Gen Chidchai said.

"We are smart enough not to allow such things to happen."

A Washington Post report last month, and recent ABC News broadcasts have reported about secret CIA jails said to have existed since March 2002 when the first was created in Thailand.

"No, they (the US media) tried to implicate us," Pol Gen Chidchai said.

"I have worked on intelligence and haven't heard such a story."

The United States used the old U Tapao naval airbase for about a month for relief operations after the 2004 tsunami, but closed down operations again.

New York-based Human Rights Watch in November said that at least three men, including Southeast Asia's most wanted man, Hambali, were arrested in Thailand in 2003 and transferred to secret CIA prisons. Hambali was arrested in Ayutthaya.

The US media trying to do the maximum damage to anyone who might possibly see Islamism for the worldwide threat it is. That said, I would doubt a prison, pretty hard to keep quiet in a country as open as Thailand.

I visited one of my late brothers-in-law at a Thai prison in Bkk back in 68.
Not a cheerful happy place to be sure.
I doubt our CIA could have made conditions worse.

I get a shiver up my spine every time I pass the prison in Phrae --- NASTY looking place even from the street. I agree that it would be hard to "improve" on.

The security at Utapao is pretty tight. It is easy to get access to most Thai military bases if you really want. Utapao is quite different. I don't want to fan the conspiracy flames, but if there was a location like this in Thailand, that is where I would put it.

I'm planning on a trip to Koh Chang in April.
The islands in the Andaman sea such as Koh Pra Tong and Koh Phuket were vetoed by a higher power.
Even Koh Samui was to close to the Tsunami area to be approved.
Pointing out that it's a different Ocean was of no use.
Arguing with Thai parents is a total waste of time once they "know" something.

LOL! Been there... still doing that... My GF constantly goes at it with her mom. I have tried to explain to her she should just agree with her mom and then do what she was originally going to do. Instead she argues about it for an hour or so before doing it anyways. Go figure...

Ya think maybe mom and your GF both are enjoying the bickering?

I intended on doing Koh Samui, but Koh Samet was given to me as permissible.
To many Thai yuppies go there for my taste so I countered with Koh Chang.
Mom and Dad approved and will allow their twin daughters to go there.
Prices on Koh Chang are better than Koh Samui so I really gave up a lot on that one.

I just go play video games and wait for the noise to quiet down. I would probably care if I could understand what they are arguing about. :)

Samui doesn't do anything for me. It is actually the only island in Thailand that I have been to. I much prefer the Mae Hong Son area if I have some free time but recently that is happening less and less.

I've been continuously associated with Thai for 39+ years I can't recall a single instance.
