I heard a story that the New Orleans superintendent caused a huge stir this year by announcing that school would start on a specific day in September. NO JOKE. Apparently in N.O. There is no official start of school, you are just supposed to start sometime when you get around to it in September or October. There were actually complaints from parents and teachers because he wanted to do this.

That superintendent has since been sacked.
