Agreed.

I wonder if anybody knows the terminology used by previous presidents.

I suspect that "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" has been used for decades.

Bush the Elder sent out a "Merry Christmas" card at least one year. Beyond that I don't know.

According to the article the last president to mention Christmas was George H. W. in 1992.
